Happy Easter

Hope everyone is having a nice Easter, no lays for me this weekend; it's time to spend a few days enjoying some quality family time.

It's great to have flat racing back but the changeover over codes is always a bit unpredicatble so if you are betting keep stakes low as there are always a few freak winners and losers at this time of year. Having weather that would be the norm in Siberia doesn't help the formbook either!

Weather permitting I will have a few lays on Tuesday.

Happy Easter !

The weather spoils everything again....

Typical, take a day off Saturday and look forward to to finding a few lays today and the weather goes and spoils everything. As we stand only Fontwell is on and I can't find anything there.

As its a quiet Sunday I'll be dabbling in a few football lays, probably Fulham, Palermo, Roda and Man City at first glance and then a few plays on the Spanish live game. When it comes to footy I always look to green out as I've been stung too many times in the past by late goals, Arsenal and Bolton spring horribly to mind.

Cheltenham fatigue

I don't think I am alone in feeling wiped out (not in a financial sense I stress) by Cheltenham week. So many top class races and horses, the plots and gambles, Irish raiders, furores over whip bans, 9 races in a day and the Denman / Kauto Star battle.

It's a great week of racing, of that there is no doubt, even if National Hunt racing isn't my favoured form of racing. Having said that, there is just so much to take in that I know many a racing / betting devotee who took a day off today to recharge the batteries and to remember there is something else in the world other than racing!

Back to the racing tomorrow. Hopefully I will find a few losers tomorow and we can press on towards £2,000.

Hardly a surprise this but a shame nevertheless; i was hoping to sue Cadburys because I love their chocolate so much that it is making me fat. Its not my fault, their choccy is too nice and I keep wanting more of it. So it must be their fault....isn't it ??

Cheltenham Day 2 Called Off

Day 2 at Cheltenham has been called off due to 'elf and safety' concerns. Listening to the Radio correspondents this morning, it was the hospitality village that was the concern, not the actual racing. Several horses were out on the course this morning with no problems but with 15-20,000 people in the corporate entertainment area, the possible danger from high winds becomes of paramount performance I guess. To see the details click here: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/12032008/58/cheltenham-day-called.html
There's still racing at Huntingdon, Wolverhampton and Southwell so I'm sure we will find a few selections with a fair chance of losing today.

Change in commission

My 2% 'deal' with Betdaq has now expired and thus my use of their exchange is sure to reduce sharply due to the lower liquidity there. They really need to improve liquidity if they are to give Betfair a run for their money.

To make the commission easier to account for and to enable me to use either Betdaq or Betfair, I will just take 5% commission of every winning stake and then it's plain for all to see the profit/loss.

Tuesday 11th March 2008 - First Day of Cheltenham

Whilst I've always favoured the all-weather and flat racing over National Hunt from a betting perspective, anyone who loves racing would agree that its hard to beat the Cheltenham Festival. Fine hores, the top trainers and jockeys in the game, speaking of which good to see Tony McCoy back in the saddle in time for Cheltenham, and thousands of drunk punters keeping the bookies in profit. Sadly I will be working so no shouting at the TV screen for me as my horse fights its way up the hill to the finish.

On the flip side I won't be shouting at the annoying so-called experts that always tip favourites and pretend that they had fancied the winner. They tip up almost every horse as in with a chance if it gets its ground or the pace of the race suits it etc etc and then tell all and sundry they picked the winner after the race! Don't worry, we won't mention the seven other horses you tipped up...

Anyway on to todays lays, hopefully we can recoup the losses from the first day of the month:

300 Woodland Mist £100@5.40

£1000 profit for February !

With no decent lays around today it means we finish the first month of the blog with a cool £1,074.62 profit. Not bad for an amateur eh ? Obviously the proof of the pudding is whether or not I'm showing a profit by the Summer or indeed the end of 2008 but we are off to a cracking start.

The secret has been, a bt like today really, not to make a selection because you feel the pressure to do so. It can often be a few days between bets but better that than a weak selection, made for the sake of it, romping home by 20 lengths and knocking a blooming great hole in the bank. Ive had several other lays shortlisted but for various reasons, often the movement in their odds, I have let them go. Some have lost but a few have won so I'm happy with how I'm narrowing down the selections.

So the figures for February finish as:

18 losing lays from 19 selections
Strike Rate 94.73%
All lays to £100 level stakes
Running Profit £1,074.62

I hope March starts as February finished....

Mystery punter waits to collect £1million payout

http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/08/02/24/RACING_Millionaire.html

Firstly I must refute all rumours that it was me. I don't do accumulators as you have a better chance of getting to the moon on the number 49 bus.

This story has been done to death the last few days. At first sight it is presented as, 'Those poor bookies' paying out £1million on an 8 horse accumulator bet' but Graham Sharpe of Hills is a shrewd cookie and is making the most of this opportunity to tempt fellow punters to try the same feat. He claims it will take 400,000 days to win their money money back from said punter.

Bookies love accumulators, ask any betting shop manager in an unguarded moment, so don't feel too sorry for them. They will get that back and more.

Nevertheless good luck to the fellow, hope he has the means to enjoy his winings and keeps his hands firmly in his posckets from now on.

Make regular backups!!!

I've had serious computer problems. Trying to install XP on a dual processor Intel Mac. Read the instructions, look at the web, seems straightforward enough I thought.

2 days later and having to wipe my computer to reinstall my Mac operating system I have lost all of my files, emails, settings and I still don't have XP installed !!!

Luckily I have only lost a few records and stats and I will be up and running again by Monday.

Compulsive Gambler sues bookmaker

No it's not April 1st...

http://www.golfmagic.com/news/article/mps/uan/5512

Self-confessed compulsive gambler Graham Calvert claims William Hill allowed him to run up losses of £2.1m after allegedly punting £7.5m in only 18 months. It's a staggering amount of money by almost any standard. He is apparently a top class greyhound trainer but it seems he did not have the same level of skill when it game to gambling.

He once gained notoriety by staking a whopping £347k on the US to win the 2006 Ryder Cup. It was believed to be the buggest ever recorded bet on golf...Europe won emphatically.

William Hill have, needless to say, refuted the claims.

You can't make money from racing ? Oh really ?

We are in the 21st century, the age of internet gambling, person to person betting exchanges, online poker, super casinos. A bet can easily be placed on everything from celebrity wallpaper hanging to whether Paris Hilton will be arrrested for drink driving in 2008. Mums are playing online bingo while the kids are at school, office workers are skiving off in their thousands to play online poker or 'play' on the betting exchanges and city whizz kids spend their spare time spread betting.

Despite this brave new world of gambling liberalisation, with its almost total acceptance by the mainstream media, if you mention in conversation that you make money from 'laying' horses on the betting exchange you receive quizzical looks and an assumption that you are somehow doing something underhand or downright daft.

"Who tells you they won't win?"

"Is there something dodgy in it ?"

"You can't make money from racing! It's a mugs game isn't it ?"

With discipline, decent statistics to base selections upon and a fair bit of time investment you can make money from racing. I decided to start this blog to prove that it can be done. I will lay my selections to £100 stakes and post up a running profit and (heaven forbid) loss. Commission will be deducted from winnings 2% using the Betdaq betting exchange.
